Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. RIP John Hughes.
“He says we’re going the wrong way.”
“Oh he’s drunk. How does he know where we’re going?”
“Yeah, how would he know? Thank you. Thanks a lot”

“No, Mc then Guinness, it’s spelt like the drink.”
“Oh, now I get ya honey.”
So went a telephone conversation with a New York deli waitress last September. Guinness is probably the most Irish product in existence. This year marks the 250th anniversary of Guinness and as part of the celebrations on 24th September, there are a number of gigs on in Dublin. When I saw a number, I actually mean a shedload cos there’s gigs in four studio venues (priced €17.59) and 28 different pubs (priced €9) across the capital. Proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to the Arthur Guinness Fund.
At the launch of Arthur’s Day last week, myself and a few other culch.ie punters were invited along to Oliver St John Gogarty’s in Temple Bar. The launch featured live performances by The Chapters (whose album I’ve since bought and is very good) and Noah and the Whale. We also got a chance to interview the Blizzards which is featured here. Tickets went on sale for the gigs this morning on Ticketmaster. I’ve yet to make my mind up on what I’m going to see but definite highlights would include: David Holmes, The Kooks, The Blizzards, The Chapters, Jamie Callum and Republic of Loose. You can catch more updates over on culch.ie or on guinness.com
This video was shot at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Japan. The main tank called the ‘Kuroshio Sea’ holds 1,981,290 gallons of water and features the world’s second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters. Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank. The divers in the tank seem insignificant in such an expanse. (Big hat tip to OmniAlx)
Paul is the new movie from comedy supremos Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It’s directed by Greg Mottola, the bloke who shot Superbad, and is currently filming in the Nevada desert. You find out all about via the blog here or watch the video below. Looking forward to this one.
I can’t claim to have watched the whole two weeks of Wimbledon. I did catch the men’s singles final yesterday between Andy Roddick and Roger Federer. Anyone who saw the match knows how much of an epic battle it was. It went to 5 sets eventually finishing with Federer winning out 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 16-14. This was Roddick’s third loss in a Wimbledon final but he composed himself to give what I believe is an amazingly humble and composed interview:
Lot of respect for the guy after that.
