Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Studio 60 on the Sunse StripWhat a quality piece of television this show is. It’s Aaron Sorkin’s new series and damn does it kick ass. There had been some advance word about it but I only picked it up when it debuted last week with a cleverly written and sharp season premiere. This is the type of TV I like to watch. In the show, executive producer of the shows titular Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, rants live on air how shows have dumbed down to an extent where quality television is no longer relevant. This is the perfect counterbalance. The premiere moves that fast and introduces so much that I had to watch it a second time around just to take it all in. It’s some of the sharpest script writing I’ve watched and the performances from the cast are superb. Unlike most of the people I know, I never caught the earlier seasons of The West Wing and so only knew Sorkin from his reputation which this show is doing nothing but enhancing.

Snakes on a Plane

Snakes on a Plane Well, what can I say really? This movie does exactly what it says on the posters. It’s got motherf*cking snakes on a motherf*cking plane. 😀 Samuel L Jackson somehow manages to become even cooler over the course of the film as he tries to keep a murder witness alive while a bunch of deadly snakes try to kill everyone.

Obviously the plot is never gonna win any Oscars but this is a simple b-movie that really isn’t afraid of what people are going to think. Saying that, the screening I attended on Sunday night was nowhere near full which may not bode well for a sequel like Hamlet 2: Snakes on a Dane or Die Hard 4: Snakes on McClain (hat tip to Trev). However, I heartily enjoyed it. The CGI is quite good and the snakes are menacing. Good unadulterated fun.

Tony’s Rating: 7.5/10

Man of the Year

This looks good. In “Man of the Year” Robin Williams plays a Jon-Stewart-like fake newscaster comedian who runs for president as a publicity stunt — and wins. 🙂

Saturday night at the Voodoo

The Finest in action
I attended another excellent gig by my favourite upcoming band, The Finest, on Saturday night at Voodoo. I randomly saw the poster while on my way to work last week so I rounded up Dave, Paul and Jay to go along. The lads have played a good few gigs since I last saw them in the Venue out in Rathfarnham and produced some great new tunes on the night. 🙂 We’re looking to develop a site for them at the moment, thefinestrocks.com, so hopefully that’ll be live in a month or so. For now you can check out their bebo bands page if you want to know more.
