Want tickets to Electric Picnic 2012? Get tweet hunting

TweetHunt 2012

I’ve been to Electric Picnic for the past few years and I really enjoy the vibe (especially the Body & Soul area). The lineup is stellar this year with Elbow, Hot Chip and Villagers being particular personal highlights and it’s on from the 31st August to the 2nd of September (full lineup here – PDF). Want a chance to win tickets? Well, the Electric Ireland Tweet Hunt is back for 2012 to give you the opportunity. From Monday 13th (today) to Friday 17th August inclusive, Electric Ireland are giving one lucky person four tickets – that’s five days, five winners and four tickets each. What have you got to do? Simples:

1). Follow @ElectricIreland on Twitter.
2). Tweet the following hashtag: #sharetheenergy which will zoom the live map in on a location. The more tweets, the closer the zoom.
3). Get to the location and keep your eyes peeled for the revealing of the hidden codeword. Tip: use the mobile site whilst you’re out and about.
4). Once you’ve spotted it, send it to @ElectricIreland via direct message.
5). The lucky winner will receive a phone call with details to collect them.

Best of luck folks!

Blockbusters: From Avatar to X-Men at the NCH

avatarxmen

I’ve been in the National Concert Hall more in the past twelve months than I have in the past twelve years. I don’t know why I haven’t gone more but I’ve had particular occasion of late due to some excellent programming. In February, the RTE Concert Orchestra put on an evening of Danny Elfman’s music as part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. The Batman theme and Mars Attacks! were particular highlights for me. The use of a theremin really makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

I was back in May to catch Close Encounters: A John Williams Celebration featuring tracks from: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., Superman and lots more. Williams is an absolute legend of modern cinema scores and hearing his music performed live was a highlight of 2012 for me. That brings me to the Concert Orchestra’s next show on the 28th July: Blockbusters: From Avatar to X-Men. It will feature music from Avatar, X-Men, Back to the Future, Independence Day, Star Trek, Titanic, Up and many more. I would highly recommend going and am raging that I can’t myself as I’ll be in Kilkenny for Devious Theatre’s Night of the Living Dead. Tickets are priced from €11 to €38 and are available here. To get you in the mood, here’s their rendition of the Superman theme from the John Williams gig:

Foster The People – Houdini

This is one of my favourite tracks from the album ‘Torches’ and they’ve made a genuinely funny video to match a brilliant song. Highly recommend picking up the album if you haven’t already.

Herzog’s Into the Abyss

I saw Werner Herzog’s “Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, A Tale of Life” this evening in the IFI. I’d heard good things from friends and tonight was the last screening so I didn’t want to miss it. Herzog has crafted a brilliant documentary about two men convicted of a triple homicide in Texas. Michael Perry received a death sentence for the crime, and Jason Burkett received a life sentence. The film focuses on the two convicts and various people affected by the crime. It’s balanced, affecting and never judgmental. Highly recommended.
