Miami Vice

Miami Vice I had intended to see this in America just before I left but was suprised to find that it was being released in Ireland so soon. Miami Vice is, of course, the big screen adaptation of Michael Mann’s 80s cop show featuring Dectectives James ‘Sonny’ Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. The film seems to have got a bit of a thrashing at the hands of the critics but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot revolves around going under deep cover to infiltrate the drug smuggling gangs who operate in and out of the US East Coast. Both Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are utterly convincing as detectives whos lives depend on being utterly immersed in what they’re doing.

As the plot winds out you get a real sense of tension in places. Mann has now become the master of shooting at night with both this film and Collateral shot mainly during the nocturnal hours. Critics have complained that you never really get to know or associate with Crockett or Tubbs but it’s in the characters interest to hide as much of themselves as possible. To give background and socialising scenes to these guys would seem absurb given the situations they are involved in. People may be expecting more action than there is out of Miami Vice. Sure there are a few excellent gun fights but there are no chase sequences. What you do get are some seriously snazzy boats, cars (the Ferrari is black this time) and planes. A criticism would be the pacing during certain sections, you do get the feeling you could shave ten minutes off this if you really wanted.

Tony’s Verdict: 7.5/10

Bloglines acting up?

Hmmm….Bloglines seems to be playing trixies over the past few days. It’s saying that some blogs have new items but when I click to view it doesn’t show any. It also didn’t show updates from websites I know were updated such as Blogography. I was thinking it could have been due to the amount of unread items I had after the trip away but now I’m not so sure.

In other news:

  • I watched Ray this evening. It’s an amazing film. You wouldn’t want to miss the first twenty minutes as the pacing is fairly quick but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I bought Ray and the Hurricane for $10 in Wal-Mart while I was in the States. Bargain. πŸ™‚
  • I’ve uploaded all of the photos from Orlando to Flickr so you can check them out if you want. I’ll warn you that there’s 400 odd photos in there but I will be highlighting my favourites in the roundup blog post so you can wait for that if you want.

Trailer Park

This week saw the release of a couple of new trailers so I thought I’d give my thoughts on them. They are:

Superman Returns Superman Returns: The official trailer for Superman Returns is now out and it looks fantastic. There’s just something about that signature music. πŸ™‚ The trailer features Kevin Spacey hamming it up as Lex Luthor and also Kate Bosworth as the love interest who got knocked up and married in the time he was away. The cinematography is signature Singer and he looks to have captured the essence of the Superman films. We’ll know by June anyway.

Casino Royale: The first teaser for Daniel Craig’s Bond is heavy on action with the minimum of dialogue. Judie Dench’s M doubts whether the young Bond is up to the job or not and what follows would seem to suggest that he’ll be just fine. We also get a brief look at Sebastien Foucan’s Parkour skills as he jumps across a construction site. Presumably he’ll do more than that come the movie considering he’s one of the villians. Looking forward to seeing this in November.
