Astronomer’s Paradise

Astronomer’s Paradise, the first episode of a Atacama Starry Nights timelapse movie series. Atacama Desert in Chile, South America, is home to some of the world’s leading telescopes. It’s also given me a real urge to go camping under the stars soon.

Punk Economics with David McWilliams

I’m really enjoying David McWilliams series of Youtube videos on the European economic crisis. It’s difficult to keep track of what’s happening so having it broken down like this is really effective. Here’s the two that have been posted so far:

Making friends at the Guinness Storehouse

Guinness Storehouse

The Guinness Storehouse, Ireland’s No. 1 tourist attraction, is gearing up for their three day St. Patrick’s Festival from 16th-18th March. This year they’re looking to make the 17th, the World’s Friendliest Day. 80% of 1,000 surveyed Irish people believe our friendly nature makes the difference. The most interesting finding was the popularity of the so-called finger wave, generally used at the steering wheel, which was voted their favourite gesture and being used more often in Connaught and Ulster.

As part of the festival, there will be live music from home grown talent such as Four Men and a Dog, eclectic bluegrass-trad group Tupelo, musical collective Eclectic Spree and many more. Building on the gesture started last year, the Storehouse will again be welcoming everybody by the firstname of Patrick, and variants of the name (click here for a list – PDF) for free on St. Patrick’s Day. A group of us went last year and had a brilliant time, so I’m looking forward to it. See ya there.

Rathbeggan Lakes

IMAG1164
Peter’s Garden Group had our first outing of the year a couple of weeks ago. The destination? Rathbeggan Lakes outside of Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath. I didn’t really know what to expect beforehand but I really enjoyed the few hours there. Head honcho Dave Robinson gave us a tour of their private allotments, woodland walk and orchard before we crossed the M3 and checked out their lakes and family park (including airsoft and fishing). It’s clear that the guys have put in a ton of work and it shows. A new heritage trail is due to open in the family park in time for summer so it’ll be another great addition to the place. I’d recommend you check out their site or listen to Peter’s Sodshow edition that he recorded on the day:

Friday Photo – Big Sky Country

Photo-0109

I haven’t taken many photos this week so I’ve picked an old one for today. This was taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming in 2008. I really want to get back to Yellowstone and catch Yosemite (which you can see a beautiful video of here) at some point.
