The Space Shuttle Endeavour landing in LAX atop a 747 for the last time. It’s permanent home as a museum piece will be the California Science Center. Very cool. (via Astronomy Picture of the Day)

When someone great is gone
My uncle Jimmy is a year gone today. He led by example and got shit done in a way that I don’t think I’ll ever see again. We’ll miss you always and especially today. “Talk to ya after”.
There some amazing projects on Kickstarter but this one in particular caught my eye. These guys are re-inventing an everyday object in a really cool way and deserve big kudos. Their original aim was to raise $100k but, to date, they’ve got commitments of $1.3 million from almost 9k funders. Oh and there’s still 51 days to go. :-0 I really hope it lives up to expectations as you can see this being a standard in future homes.
Arthur’s Day is fast approaching
Wow, that was a quick 12 months. Arthur’s Day (27th September), Guinness’ celebration for their founding father, is back and has a changed format for 2012. Firstly, there’s no tickets to buy this year and gigs will take place in 500 pubs across the 32 counties. Big acts like Example, Tinie Tempah, Mumford and Sons, Primal Scream, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Ellie Goulding, Mika, Professor Green, Fatboy Slim, Texas and Amy Macdonald will join home grown talent and they could play in your local. How? Simply vote for your local on the Facebook app. To date, over 55,000 people have but voting closes on the 16th September so get your skates on. The winning pubs will remain a secret to the public until the night itself so you never know who might walk through the door.
The Arthur Guinness Fund supports social entrepreneurs in Ireland (like Decisions for Heroes) and around the world who are in the business of changing communities for the better. This year, for every ‘check-in’ by people to the Arthur’s Day Facebook event, a €5 donation will be made to the Arthur Guinness Fund by Guinness. Check out details on how to RSVP and ‘check-in’ on the Guinness Ireland Facebook page. See you on the 27th.
First let me start off by saying that I hadn’t listened to an LCD Soundsystem album up until two weeks ago when I bought ‘Sound of Silver’. Last night was the premiere of “Shut Up And Play The Hits” which is the concert film directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern of the band’s last ever gig in Madison Square Garden. The gig footage is the highlight and is inter cut with footage of James Murphy explaining his decision on ending the band on such a high. It’s clear that the guy isn’t sure whether he’s doing the right thing or not and he’ll only realistically know in hindsight. Fair balls to him on doing it though cos as he says himself: “I want to do other stuff. I like to make coffee”.
