Yawning Pervades

Out at Gamecon 7 at the moment. Have been here since 11am this morning and am starting to feel the tiredness. 😐 Hence the title of this post. The event goes on until 9am so myself and my cousin, Irvine, will be staying until then. I’m going to need a couple of hours sleep at some stage though.

Sad news today that Robin Cook died while out hill-walking in Scotland. I didn’t know too much about the guy but he seemed to be a politician with principles. Especially after his stance on the Iraq war.

Tried out Skype today for the first time. I picked up a headset this morning, a Logitech Precision PC Gaming headset to be precise. Since I’m at Gamecon today, a lot of the games support voice communication so I can chat to the other players. Skype seems excellent and the rates are really good. At only 1 cent per minute for landline calls in Dublin, I can see myself using it a fair bit in future. 🙂

Also updated the site to WordPress 1.5.1.3. I had been meaning to do it for the last few days so it was nice to finally stop procrastinating and do it. 😉

Sky News Flash!!

This entry has absolutely nothing to do with a news flash but that’s what seems to get attention these days so I’m using it. Instead this is a general update on what the hell I’ve been up to and some cool stuff I want to link to:

  • I’ve been viewing Sam Javanrouh’s “Daily Dose of Imagery” now for some months and have to say that it’s fantastic. The site is basically a photoblog where Sam posts a fresh photo each day. Some of recent favourites include: flying girl, pigeons and the girl, ghost on bench, moon at the beaches, canada day – beaches. He really has an eye for a great photo.
  • I went to the “Stand Up Against Racism” gig last Friday in Vicar Street. A superb line up provided some of the best laughs I’ve had in a long time and we kept the party going afterwards at 4 Dame Lane until the early hours. Sadly, on Friday evening a racist attack occured in Liverpool where an innocent young man was killed with an axe. People who commit these atrocities should be put away for life – meaning life.
  • Big “Happy Birthday” to Louise whose birthday it was on Monday. We went out to “The Village” bar on Sunday night to celebrate and, as it was karaoke night, most of the group (besides me) put in to sing songs. Lisa was the only one called up but she did a superb rendition of Scissor Sisters – “Take Your Moma”. Have some quality photos from the night that need uploading, hopefully get to that in the next couple of days.
  • It’s but two weeks away from the holiday now with myself and Mark flying on the 18th. Another mate, Hugh, was meant to go but the flights went up in price and he chose to drop out. 🙁 We’re still determined to have a great holiday and will be staying in my uncle’s apartment so accomodation isn’t a worry. 🙂
  • Gamecon 7 is coming up this weekend. For the uninitiated it’s a LAN based event where people bring their PCs along to play networked games for a day or so. This event is 36 hours but I don’t know if I’m going to be able to last that long. 😯

That’s all I have time for now considering I’m at a meeting in another part of the city in 15 minutes. At least my boss is driving. 🙂

General Roaccutane

Finished the Roaccutane

Well, I had my final consultation with my dermatologist last week. I’ve just been finishing off the course of Roaccutane over the past while and the difference that it’s made has been noticeable. I get quite a few comments about it from friends/relatives and although it’ll never be perfect, I’m more than happy with the results. Going on Roaccutane was about sorting a problem I had been living with for 10 years. I only saw it as a problem in certain situations but I never need to do that again. Some people talk about the side affects of Roaccutane but I can honestly say that I didn’t experience any serious side affects. Yes, there were days when my mood was all over the place. I will never forget one particularly horrific incident when my skin was peeling badly and I only noticied it when I went to the toilet. 😳

However, it did the job for me. I believe strong drugs like Roaccutane should be monitored and researched constantly to make sure that their positive effects don’t outweigh their negative ones. I’m now more outgoing than I previously was and, although it sounds stupid, I’ve noticied more women looking at me in bars. 😉

FridayQ: Endings

It’s a Sunday and it’s over a week late. Sue me. 😛

From the past, what’s something that’s ended which you wish hadn’t? Hmmm….that’s a tough one. Probably my time in college. I don’t know why I clicked with the experience like I did but it was fantastic.

From today, what’s something that’s gone on too long and you wish it would end now? The “war” in Iraq. They’ve created a massive quagmire that will take decades to sort out.

For tomorrow, what’s something you wish would never end at all? The goodness of the human spirit. That sounds like bullshit and it could very well be but with the amount of people out there who are making a difference daily, the world ain’t doomed in my eyes.

FQ FINALE: Visit the FridayQ Archives, and revisit an old favorite with new answers, or pick a favorite you missed to answer new. Since I’m into films I chose the Cinema FridayQ. 🙂

If you could own any item from any movie, what would you take and why?
That would have to be the Delorian from Back to the Future. Screw any of the cars on Pimp My Ride, this is the original and best movie vehicle. What other car travels through time when it hits 88 miles an hour?! Now….where did I put that plutonium?

If you could become any character from any movie, who would it be and why?
I’d be John Keating (the teacher) from Dead Poets Society. Being able to instill a sense of right and wrong into young people is as an admirable thing as I can imagine. The character embodied what I would one day like to be as a teacher.

If you could visit any location from any movie, where would it be and why? I’d visit New Zealand where the Lord of the Rings was filmed. It’s an obvious answer but the place seems so picturesque and gorgeous. My backup answer is Astoria where the Goonies was filmed. Love that movie. 😀

FQ MOVIE MASH-UP: Combine some items, characters, and locations from different movies to create an entirely new film! What would you call it and what would it be about Ok, well I’d take Vince Vaughan from Swingers, Chunk from the Goonies, Gene Wilder from the Producers, Billy Crystal from When Harry Met Sally, Tom Hanks from any of his films plus Michael J Fox. In terms of props, I’d take the Delorian as previously mentioned, and a healthy supply of Jaffa Cakes. The story would involve time travelling to different historical wars and setting up camp. The guys would feed the troops Jaffa Cakes and regail them with tales from the future. I’ve absolutely no idea why I came up with that as it seems fairly pyschotic. 😆 It doesn’t have a title.

Alas, this is the last FridayQ as Dave has decided to retire the series. Even if I wasn’t always punctual, I always loved doing it so farewell FridayQ and may you have a great retirement. 🙂

FAQ for the DOD

Went along last night to catch David O’Doherty’s warm up show for the Edinburgh Festival last night. He had posted on a forum I frequent and asked people to go along as he wanted to test out material. I had only seen him once beforehand in the International when he was on stage with Tommy Tiernan and Dave McSavage. I met up with a few of the people from the forum, who I suppose should get a mention to make them famous, namely Wikki, Chirri, Kinky and Cali….oh and Brian. 🙂 The show itself was on from 6 to 7 and was superb. Dave has this really endearing way of presenting his material and the jokes are all the better for it. He does some songs on his keyboard between jokes and we were in stitches the whole time. 😆 One of them, “FAQ for the DOD”, gives his answers for commonly asked questions by journalists. 🙂 I have some photos from the night but I need to tidy them up before posting them. Planning on going to “Stand Up Against Racism” which is on in Vicar Street tomorrow night. There’s a quality lineup including Tommy Tiernan, the aforementioned David O’Doherty, Reuben, Maeve Higgins and Barry Murphy.
