Editors gig

Editors Went to see Editors last night in Whelans. Apparently the gig was sold out for ages beforehand so I dropped Kate, a friend of mine who works in concert promotion, an email and she got myself and Dave on the guestlist. These guys are on the up and up and their debut album, Back Room, has been on my iRiver for a couple of weeks now. The venue itself is quite small with perhaps 200 people able to stand in it. We got in quite early so stood at the front of the stage.

Editors Channel One were the support band and they had a great 80s style sound combining synths and strings to great effect. They played about 7 songs and then the stage was set up for Editors. Dave was the one who insisted we go to the gig in the first place and he knew a hell of a lot more about the band then I did. They started their set with Lights, a great track and one which got the crowd going straight away. Standout tracks from the night included Blood, Fingers in the Factories, Open Your Arms, All Sparks and my favourite track Bullets. Fantastic gig, these guys are gonna be big.

Ireland (0) vs France (1)

Severely disappointed after last nights result. I thought Ireland played well and were undone by a superb goal from Thierry Henry. 🙁 I watched it down my local with the lads and the place was packed. The atmosphere at Landsdowne sounded brilliant and the team got about the French well in the first half. In the second half they stood off a bit and got caught by Henry’s curling shot in the 68th minute. It was a well balanced game but now we need 6 points from the last two games if we want to secure a play-off spot. Here’s hoping.

List with a twist

  • Picked up my new Sony Ericsson k750i yesterday. I went up to the Carphone Warehouse on Grafton St on Tuesday to sort it out as my old t630 had been damaged by water and was basically beyond repair. I have insurance so the new k750i only cost me €129. Considering I was contemplating paying €500 for a Nokia 6680, I think it’s the right decision for my bank balance.
  • I went to see The Finest play a gig last Saturday in Whelans. I met two of the band members, Lougho and Campbells, at Oxegen and have met up a few times since. They’re a quality band and could well be headlining the “Bus Arena” next year at Oxegen. 😀 Their set included a smashing cover of “The House of the Rising Sun” as well as a few of the tunes from their CD, “On The Line”. I was hoping to see them this Friday in Bray but I have a wedding the next morning so it’s looking unlikely.
  • I’ve been reading a lot of commentary on Hurricane Katrina. I’ve yet to blog about it as I’ve been collecting material and will post an entry at the weekend.
  • Some of the posts I’ve been reading on Katrina form a group of posts I’ve kept new in Bloglines. Problem is that the list of posts is growing and I’m not having time to trim it back. 😐
  • Dave and Michael have both posted about Mint, a new script to analyse stats and stuff for your blog. Dave gave it a great review but I’m waiting to assess whether I want to buy it. My LunarPages account comes with Webalizer and awStats but they tend to be a bit hard to read.

And the twist….there is no twist. How u like them apples? 😛

Game Off

Bit late in writing this up considering it’s Wednesday but last Sunday’s trip out to Laytown was a complete waste of time. We were due to play East Meath United away so I thought East Meath United would be pretty close to Dunboyne. Turns out it was at least an hours drive north-east out to Laytown. After asking lots of people where Laytown actually was, we arrived and noticied a game already in progress. Turns out the league changed the fixture without informing our club. 👿 Cue lots of disappointment from the players. We barely had the 11 players out due to a shortage at the moment so situations like this really don’t help.

A new season starts

Had my first training session with the team from Dunboyne last night. For anyone not in the know, I train and manage a team of 15 year old lads at Dunboyne AFC. I manage the 15C team. Last season I was a bit frustrated in that I couldn’t properly train the team on fitness and skills as I didn’t know any drills etc. I began sorting that out over the summer by taking the “Kickstart Level 1” coaching course that is run by the FAI. The course was great fun and gave me a lot of great tips on how to deal with and plan the training sessions. I still have a long way to go and there’s another course on in October.

After the training session finished last night, two of the managers from the 15As team were waiting to have a chat. They wanted to transfer two of my players up to their team and I agreed as you can’t really stand in the way of the lads development. I wished them the best and they’ll be in good company as two other players from my team last year have already moved up to the A team () over the summer. It may leave us tight on numbers this year but I may be able to borrow players for games if we’re short. The first game is this Sunday against East Meath United so there’ll be a report from that.
