I saw a post that Ian made a few weeks ago about a cool use of Google Maps, called gVisit. If you insert a small Javascript in the head of your pages then it will track the people who visit by city and plot them on a map. My current list of visitors is here. There have been some really interesting cities listed so far such as Wellington, New Zealand and Johannesburg, South Africa. You can see the last few visits in the box on the right hand side of this page. The free version lists the last 20 visits but if you make a donation, of any amount, that goes up to 100. I’d like to be able to exclude my own work and home IP addresses so I’ll see if I can throw that in there tonight.

Weekend Roundup
Had a fairly busy weekend which started with football on Friday and finished with “Red Eye” last night. I’m conscious of this blog just descending into lists of things I’m doing but I promise I’ll be back to better posts soon.
- Friday: There was a disappointing crowd for football as its been for the past few weeks. We had 9 this week which isn’t all that bad considering we only had 6 the week before. EDIT: The photos are now up on Flickr.
- Saturday I went out to see if I could sort out my cousin’s PC. They don’t live close to a major town so wired broadband isn’t there yet. Some company called ilDana are providing satellite broadband in the area but the service is crap. He was getting no ADSL signal from the antenna at all. He rang his neighbour and he had the same issue. 😯 Basically it meant that I couldn’t do the work I needed to on the PC. 👿 Plus they don’t provide weekend support. WTF? Saturday night I went to see Des Bishop in Vicar St. I went with a crowd I know from his web site and it was a great laugh. We got free tickets which was a bonus and they were front and centre on the balcony. His new show focuses on the experiences he’s had in living in disadvantaged communities around the country. Basically he’d go into an area for a few weeks and do comedy workshops with the locals who would then put on a show at the end of it. The TV series is due to start in January but the stand up material he got from it was very funny.
- Sunday: I woke up at about 11.25 with my phone ringing. It was Mark who wanted to go down to the pub to watch the Manchester United vs Liverpool game on tele. I reluctantly got out of bed and was in the pub a half hour later. It turned out to be a rubbish game with only 4 shots on target. 🙄 It was confounded by the fact that Roy Keane broke a small bone in his foot and is now set to miss Ireland’s crucial World Cup qualifying game against Switzerland. 👿
Last night I went to see Red Eye with Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams. No, I didn’t go with them, they are in it. 🙂 It was an enjoyable thriller and had some genuinely scary moments. Overall I’d give it a 6.5 out of ten.
Mmmmm….steak
Went for lunch in Shanahans on the Green this afternoon. It’s basically Dublin’s most expensive restaurant and I can attest to that after seeing the bill. 😯 Thankfully it was a treat for my section by our boss as this is something he does ever once in a while. Everyone went for the steak and they were gorgeous. I went for a ‘Filet Mignon’ which was a 12 oz steak done medium. Gorgeous. 😀 In unrelated news, the football game tonight sees the departure of one of the lads to England. Should be a good turnout for it. BTW: I’m supporting MacGyver for President in 2008.
I’ve been reading a lot of stuff lately on Bloglines so some of these entries relate to those but also things going on at the mo:
- I’m currently filling out a job application form. As some of you (I always wonder who reads this ) may know, I’m in a temporary position with Dublin.ie until January. I may then be kept on longer but there’s no guarantees. A permanent position arose in the IS department which looks like it suits the area of work I like. The application needs to be in by Thursday so I’m going to work on it tonight as well.
- Podz made an excellent post on the bird flu pandemic and links to a number of articles on the issue. This type of thing isn’t given the attention it deserves.
- Sam over at [daily dose of imagery] has posted some great photos of late. Some of my favourites include: out of place, hydro towers and fog and trapped sunset. The guy has serious talent.
- Tom posts about eBay’s aquisition of Skype. Now I’m beginning to understand why eBay were so keen to make this deal go through. $2.6 billion dollars is a lot of cash. 😯 He also posted about flexible LCD screens which look really cool plus the upcoming TechCamp Ireland event in October. I’m not too sure if I’ll be able to make it as it’s a former work colleagues wedding reception that evening.
- Dave’s done up a couple of ridiculous posts on superheroes he’d like to be. Part 1 & Part 2. 🙂
- Over at Asterisk, D. Keith Robinson writes an excellent write-up about Kanye West’s new album, Late Registration. He pretty much sums up my feelings on it and its a superb listen. My favourite tracks are: Touch the Sky, Crack Music, Roses, Addiction, We Major and Celebration.
Anti-Trusted Computing video
This little video about Trusted Computing is excellent. It pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter. If they don’t trust me, why should I trust them?
