Serenity

Serenity Wow, what a great sci-fi movie. There had been quite a lot of talk about Joss Whedon’s first movie but I can’t say I was all that excited. Why? Mainly because I never watched Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and his other series, Firefly, which Serenity was based on was never shown over here. Serenity is one of the best sci-fi films of recent times and I agree with Dave in that it shows what Star Wars was doing wrong. You get a real sense of character from every cast member and the script is witty, intelligent and downright scary. These people are friends and they need to stick together to survive. I’ll definitely be looking out for this when it comes to DVD. 🙂

Oh and Jewel Staite is f*cking hot.

Tony’s Verdict: 9/10

Cyprus (0) – Ireland (1)

Watched the match last night with Dave down in the Ball Alley. Ireland are under pressure to qualify for the World Cup after continually letting wins turn into draws so we basically had to win last night. A “win” generally suggests that you are better than the other team but that was not the case last night. Ireland got off to a great start and Stephen Elliott got his first senior goal with a smivelling half volley after a knock down from Robbie Keane. What happened after the goal was unbelievable though. Ireland simply switched off. It was like they had decided that now they had scored they were going to sit back and let Cyprus attack and pass the ball about.

We have one man to thank for Cyprus not scoring: Shay Given. Shortly after Elliott scored, Richard Dunne, a big, slow central defender brought down a Cypriot player in the box. The ref duly signalled a penalty but Given pulled off a fantastic save to deny them. Thereafter he made a string of high quality saves as the rest of the squad seemed to have fallen asleep. The second half wasn’t much better and we were lucky to hang on for the win. A lot needs to change before Wednesday’s crunch game against Switzerland. We’re hampered by the fact that Damien Duff will probably miss the game due to a knee injury he picked up while trying to add some zest into the game. I just hope to God we do it but looking at last night’s performance doesn’t instill me with confidence.

Two bizarre news stories

While reading through Boing-Boing this morning, I came across two crazy stories. The first was about a 13-foot Burmese python who ate a crocodile in the Everglades and subsequently burst. There’s a great quote at the end of the story from Joe Wasilewski, a wildlife biologist and crocodile tracker, who urged caution for people in the area but said “This is not a ‘Be afraid, be very afraid’ situation.” 😀

The second was about how scientists have taught dolphins to combine both rhythm and vocalisations to produce music, resulting in an extremely high-pitched, short version of the Batman theme song. Apparently it’s the first time that non-human mammals have shown they can recognise rhythms and reproduce them vocally. If they teach them more tunes then I’d happily go along to a concert at Seaworld. 🙂

Blog for the now

I have an awful habit of postponing stuff. I’m a true procrastinator in that it seems to infect almost all areas of my life. This morning however, I’m making a promise to myself and this blog. When I find entries I want to blog about in Bloglines, I won’t keep them new for weeks and weeks in the hope that I’ll eventually get around to them. I’ll just post there and then and get it over with. 🙂 This is obviously easier said than done but I’m going to tweak the times at which I read posts in Bloglines to make sure I can keep up.

23rd Post Meme

Janine tagged me to do this so I best do it. 😛 The instructions are:

  • Search your blog archive
  • Find your 23rd post
  • Find the fifth sentence – this is meant to say something about you
  • Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions
  • Tag five people to do the same

Now, my one is slightly complicated by the fact that I back dated a lot of articles I did for the Voice magazine so they were excluded. Truth be told my 23rd post doesn’t actually have a fifth sentence, it was terribly short and boring so I went with the 22nd post. If I’m cheating then screw it, it’s my blog. 😎

The post was made on the 8th of April, 2004 and was entitled “Day Two”. Sentence number five reads:

We were moved to the Tossa Beach hotel about an hour away and the lads are delighted.

The entry was made while we were in Spain with the football club and describes how we moved hotel after getting stuck in a crap one at first. Don’t know what that sentence says about me though. 😕
