There’s a fantastic story on the BBC about a snake who “befriended” a hamster given to him as a meal. Apparently the hamster has been known to fall asleep on the snake. 😆

Zeldman has written an excellent article about Web 2.0 and suggests that we skip the middleman and go striaght to Web 3.0. I like and use some Web 2.0 sites such as Flickr and rememberthemilk.com but I can see his point that people are making too much out of it and not concentrating on the important factors that go into deciding whether sites are successes or failures.
Brokeback Mountain
What a fantastic film this is. I wasn’t too sure of the plotline going into the film, aside from hearing that it involved gay cowboys but essentially it’s a love story. The two central performances make the film and although I would have been hesitant about Heath Ledger’s acting skills, this is the performance of his career. It keeps your attention throughout by illustrating the relationships between the two principal characters and how their feelings for each other are complicated by circumstance and timing. One thing I was suprised about was the amount of people leaving during the film. I’ve seen this before but there were maybe 10-15 people and that’s a lot when you’re trying to concentrate on a film. I wonder was it through being uncomfortable with the subject matter or that they thought the film was slow. Either way, they missed out on an impressive piece of cinema.
The photos are FUBAR
Ok so I’ve finally figured out what’s going on with the photos section. Since the upgrade to WordPress 2, any of the photos pages for the albums or recent shots have been sent with a 404 header. The page is still being generated just fine and Firefox displays it OK which is why I didn’t find the problem initially. It’s something to do with the .htaccess file and I can’t figure it out for the life of me. There were a lot of changes with WordPress 2 so I’ve posted to both the forums for WP and FAlbum in an effort to sort it out. Until then the photo section will be buggy.
Update: As a temporary measure I’ve disabled “Friendly Urls” for the photos so they should all work but the URLs won’t look as well. I’m still trying to figure out a fix and have been talking with Colin Seymour who has some experience with FAlbum.
Update II: Colin posted a workaround for the friendly URLs issue by using wp-config.php instead of wp-header.php but it required a bit of editing within wp-includes/functions.php. It’s not ideal but it’s working. 🙂
Have been tweaking a few bits on the site which include:
- Finally fixed the photo display in the sidebar. 🙂
- Added recent comments to the sidebar using the Brian’s Latest Comments plugin.
- Added a list of recent posts to the sidebar.
- Added the facility to subscribe to comments. I haven’t got many comments going at the moment but it may be a handy tool in the future.
It’s amazing how long simple tasks like that take. It could be because I’m sick at the moment and my head’s a bit fuzzy. There’s still a few bits and pieces that I need to do but I’ve tackled the major things which were annoying me. It appears as if the random errors in the photo section have something to do with WordPress’ handling of the htaccess file so I’m seeking help on that.
