Easter Roundup List Thing

Well we haven’t had a list in a while and I have a few things to comment on so here goes:

  • Spent last night watching the Champions League semi-final between AC Milan and Barcelona. Mark and Dave came around to watch it but we spent most of the time looking at random videos from youtube. Also ordered a Domino’s pizza and got 50% off (the magic of vouchers!) which meant the total came to €20 for all our food. Happy days.
  • Didn’t get up to much over the Easter weekend. Spent the rest of Sunday setting up my uncle’s wireless broadband and it works quite well. He’s out past Maynooth so wired broadband isn’t an option. He went for Clearwire and the reception is excellent. Still can’t compare to my NTL broadband though 🙂 (entry on that coming this weekend).
  • My King Kong DVD arrived from SendIt.com. Must get around to watching that at the weekend although it has joined the massive ‘unwatched’ pile.
  • Work has been quite busy. I’m trying to get my head around the idea of maintaining and managing a site for a city. Even saying those words is freaking me out. I’m confident we’ll get it right in the end but it will be a lot of hard work.
  • I nabbed a ticket for Roy Keane’s Testimonial game next month between United and Celtic. One of the lads from work sorted me out but we’re flying back from Liverpool the next day instead of coming back with the group that night. To fly out of Manchester the next day with any of the Irish airlines would have cost upwards of £125 hence why it’s Liverpool. :O

For now, I’m off to the pub to watch the other semi-final between Arsenal and Villareal. If you want to understand why I love football so much then some of the videos on this site will explain.

1916 Commemoration

DSC01036 Went in to Dublin this morning for the 1916 Easter Rising Commemoration. The Rising was a strike for Irish freedom during a time when the country was controlled by Britain. It’s fitting that those men be remembered 90 years on as it was the catalyst which drove us to where we are now as a republic. Dignitaries were present at the GPO (main H.Q. during the fighting) today and we got a good position in the centre of O’Connell St. I’ve uploaded all the pictures I took to Flickr which include shots of the military parade and fly past. RTE says that up to 120,000 people lined the route.

Time Gentleman Please

Interesting discussion started by Potato about pub closing times (with references from Twenty). I agree with a lot of what he said but there’s also the related problem of transport in the city. Why on earth do nitelinks only run twice from Monday to Thursday at 12.30 and 2.00am? When I was in college there was a much better service, especially on Thursday considering its “student nite” in most clubs. Plus, they’ve curtailed the Friday/Saturday service to a bus every half hour from 12.30 until 4.30 or “more frequently if demand dictates”. What the hell is that? Am I supposed to guess what demand will be like on any given weekend?! I can understand Dublin Bus not wanting Nitelinks to be leaving half empty but people have to wait around on the street if they’ve just missed them. Westmoreland Street when niteclubs have closed isn’t the safest place to be.

Now you may be wondering “why don’t ya just get a taxi?”, well as Rick O’Shea has recently pointed out on DublinBlog.ie, taxis can be hard to come by on weekend nights. Plus it costs €20-25 for a taxi from town to my place and that can add up over the course of a couple of nights out. Maybe if we had better transport, plus revised opening hours, we’d be able to curtail drink related crime etc but there’s a lot more to it than just when the barman calls time.

Firefox Flicks

Firefox Flicks is a competition to create an ad to showcase Firefox as a browser. The top prize is a $5,000 voucher for an electronic equipment store plus there’s lots of other top quality stuff up for grabs. They’ve posted the first few videos that people have submitted and my favourite so far is Double Click Relief. It doesn’t take itself too seriously plus it contains one of the best slogans for Firefox I’ve ever heard:

First guy: One out of ten leading IT professionals prefer Firefox over the leading browser.
Second guy: One out of ten?!
First guy: You can’t trust the other nine.

Kenny’s 30th

1976Great night had by all on Saturday for my mate Kenny’s 30th birthday. 🙂 It was a constume party with the theme as 1976 but, after not being able to pick up a Six Million Dollar man outfit, I settled for a Pimp outfit. The rental cost wasn’t too bad at €55 as I had it from Thursday until Monday. Anyhoo, I’ve included the shots I’ve taken as a set in the photos section.
