Finally posted a group of photos from the Editors gig in the Ambassador on the 28th of May. Myself, Dave, Paddy, Ryaner, Gar and his girlfriend Imogen rambled along but were suprised to find it was a dry gig. Basically that means they won’t be selling beer but that fact wasn’t advertised on any of the promotional materials or the tickets. Personally I’m not all that pushed but it should have said it somewhere. The gig itself was fantastic and these guys are really good live. Tom (lead singer) has a real knack for producing almost the exact sound that’s produced in the studio and they put quite a bit of energy into the performane. More photos in the photos section.

The last three days have seen summer arrive in Ireland…..finally. I didn’t get to see much of it on Thursday though. As I’ve mentioned before, we have been moving the website I work for. As part of the site we have a free email system where anyone can sign up. As you can imagine, moving a system like that from one location to another can be quite a job and we realised on Wednesday evening that it couldn’t be done across the net and we’d need to do it in person.
So, Thursday lunchtime we travelled out to our existing servers to copy all the data on to a USB drive. Unfortunately that took six and a half hours! 😯 Then we proceeded to get some food at Eddie Rockets (cheers, Paul) and head for the new datacentre which is about ten minutes drive from my house. Things were much faster transferring onto the new servers and despite a few hitches we had the system up and running again by about 2.45am. Big kudos to Paul @ Blacknight who did all the tough work and stuck with it. I’m happy that we’ll be able to offer a faster service and have more software support than we had before.
Anyway, I’m off to a BBQ so whatever you’re doing with your weekend, enjoy it. 😀
My Name Is Earl
After my last post bitching about Lost I thought I should even things out by giving a hearty “Tony’s Thumbs-Up Award of Total Excellence” to one of the best shows on at the moment, My Name Is Earl. Not too sure why I started watching it in the first place but it’s a quality comedy show. For the uninitiated it revolves around, Earl, a man who made his living by robbing and stealing.
When Earl wins the lottery and gets hit by a car he starts thinking that Karma is trying to tell him something, so Earl writes up a list. No ordinary list, a list of all the bad things he’s done to people. There ya have it, a simple premise for a show. No crazy hatches or “others”, just good old fashioned sharp screenwriting and perfect casting. Jason Lee is perfect in the central role of Earl and is accompanied by Ethan Suplee as his hapless brother. There’s also fantastic eye candy in the form of Jaime Pressly as Joy his crazy ex-wife, and Nadine Velazquez as Catalina. Some of the touches are just fantastic including the use of music from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in the last episode. 😀 Looking forward to the new season in the Autumn already.
Well I watched the final few episodes of Lost last weekend and was thoroughly disappointed with it. I’m finally starting to see why some people have a problem with the show. It just keeps asking more and more questions with little or no resolution to existing storylines. Apparently Carlton Cuse an executive producers has said “there’s a lot of mysteries and a lot of questions about the Others that the audience is going to be curious about going into season three”. Aren’t there enough bloody questions already?! Nonetheless I’ve learned my lesson and won’t be tuning in next season.
In other news, the site seems to be attracting the attentions of comment spammers with about 150 submitted in the past few days. Akismet does a good job of stopping them accompanied by Bad Behaviour and Hash-Cache. I was reading Michele’s post “Why nofollow sucks” today when I realised all my comment links fall into the same trap. I’ve deployed the dofollow plugin so we’ll see if it gives proper links out to those who comment.
Been quite busy of late hence the lack of updates. I’ll just do a brief roundup so:
- Went to see Editors last Wednesday in the Ambassador so I’ll be posting up photos from the gig later on.
- Yesterday was baby April’s christening (Dave and Mary’s baby) and I was a godfather. Really nice occasion and good to catch up with them as I haven’t seen them in a while.
- Work is a bit mad at the moment. We’re moving our servers from one host to another which means the website plus the email system. It has to be done by Wednesday as well or we’ll run into another month of costs with the old host. Will be a late night tomorrow as a result. 🙁
