Miami Vice
I had intended to see this in America just before I left but was suprised to find that it was being released in Ireland so soon. Miami Vice is, of course, the big screen adaptation of Michael Mann’s 80s cop show featuring Dectectives James ‘Sonny’ Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. The film seems to have got a bit of a thrashing at the hands of the critics but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot revolves around going under deep cover to infiltrate the drug smuggling gangs who operate in and out of the US East Coast. Both Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are utterly convincing as detectives whos lives depend on being utterly immersed in what they’re doing.
As the plot winds out you get a real sense of tension in places. Mann has now become the master of shooting at night with both this film and Collateral shot mainly during the nocturnal hours. Critics have complained that you never really get to know or associate with Crockett or Tubbs but it’s in the characters interest to hide as much of themselves as possible. To give background and socialising scenes to these guys would seem absurb given the situations they are involved in. People may be expecting more action than there is out of Miami Vice. Sure there are a few excellent gun fights but there are no chase sequences. What you do get are some seriously snazzy boats, cars (the Ferrari is black this time) and planes. A criticism would be the pacing during certain sections, you do get the feeling you could shave ten minutes off this if you really wanted.
Tonyβs Verdict: 7.5/10
Happy birthday to the web
Yesterday the web turned 15 years-old. It’s hard to believe that the web was only started in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee as, by now, it’s become all encompassing. My first experience of the web was back in 1995 when my uncle Des invited myself and my dad over to have a look at his new computer and “internet”. I hadn’t a clue what he was talking about but Des was always big into technology. He was the first in the family, and probably one of the first in the country, to own a mobile phone. The thing was massive and looked ridiculous compared to models released only a couple of years later. π
When we arrived at his place to check out his new “internet” we were greeted by the now fabled modem dialling tone and soon we were surfing away. He asked me where I wanted to go and I suggested Nintendo as I was quite a fan-boy back then (still am I suppose) but as the page slowly started to load and the logo came up, I was fascinated. Back then almost every page seemed to have a grey background and black/white text on it, my how things have changed. Des passed on a few years later from a heart attack but I’ll never forget the fact that he was the one who introduced me to my future career and I’m enternally grateful to him for it.
So, when did you first use the web?
Darth Vader messing
This is very good. π
Hmmm….Bloglines seems to be playing trixies over the past few days. It’s saying that some blogs have new items but when I click to view it doesn’t show any. It also didn’t show updates from websites I know were updated such as Blogography. I was thinking it could have been due to the amount of unread items I had after the trip away but now I’m not so sure.
In other news:
- I watched Ray this evening. It’s an amazing film. You wouldn’t want to miss the first twenty minutes as the pacing is fairly quick but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I bought Ray and the Hurricane for $10 in Wal-Mart while I was in the States. Bargain. π
- I’ve uploaded all of the photos from Orlando to Flickr so you can check them out if you want. I’ll warn you that there’s 400 odd photos in there but I will be highlighting my favourites in the roundup blog post so you can wait for that if you want.
