What Grinds My Gears

Michele did this a few weeks ago which inspired me to create a list of my own:

  • People who talk in cinemas: The bugs the shite out of me. “Your not watching it at home moron, it’s not cool to talk”. A recent example included the skanger mother who took her young kids to see a 9pm show of Snakes on a Plane. They sat down beside us and I had to actually move to get away from their constant talking. 👿
  • Dumbass drivers: Ireland is know particularly for its crap drivers some of which I encounter on my daily commute. Granted, I don’t drive but you would think a big ass yellow and blue bus in your mirror would indicate that you shouldn’t block the bus lane.
  • Lack of integrity and responsibility: This applies to politicians in particular. When we spent €200 million on a failed e-voting system no-one stepped down, they merely moved department. Wtf is that? You monumentally screwed up and spent taxpayers money on something you knew wouldn’t work?! If that was me I’d consider it an honour to be allowed resign before my ass was thrown to the kerb whereupon I would be beaten to a pulp by voters with said machines. Now our Taoiseach has revealed that he took a “loan” from friends of his, who are business men and hasn’t paid a cent back. They’re businessmen, they don’t give out free money. 👿
  • Irish prices: Why does everything have to cost a bomb over here? It’s madness. American’s bitch about the price of their petrol but take a look at sites like pumps.ie and you’ll see how much of a raw deal we get, and that’s by the litre! It costs €10 to buy a ticket to the cinema and then you’re looking at another €10 for popcorn, drink and minstrels. Plus they’ve taken away the butter cos “someone could slip on it”. 👿 👿
  • “Broadband” in Ireland: Damien Mulley has written some excellent pieces on broadband or the lack thereof in Ireland. His latest shows just how badly we’re being ripped off. You can get 52Mb broadband for the equivalent of €25. That’s insane!! The average for the top 15 speed wise is 18Mb with a cost of €34 or thereabouts. So why do we continue to be underserved and overcharged?

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Studio 60 on the Sunse StripWhat a quality piece of television this show is. It’s Aaron Sorkin’s new series and damn does it kick ass. There had been some advance word about it but I only picked it up when it debuted last week with a cleverly written and sharp season premiere. This is the type of TV I like to watch. In the show, executive producer of the shows titular Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, rants live on air how shows have dumbed down to an extent where quality television is no longer relevant. This is the perfect counterbalance. The premiere moves that fast and introduces so much that I had to watch it a second time around just to take it all in. It’s some of the sharpest script writing I’ve watched and the performances from the cast are superb. Unlike most of the people I know, I never caught the earlier seasons of The West Wing and so only knew Sorkin from his reputation which this show is doing nothing but enhancing.

Velociraptors on the 18th green

RaptorSo the Ryder Cup tees off today in Straffen, Co. Kildare this morning. The weather has been a big concern all week with the tail end of Hurricane Gordon swinging on by. There was serious wind last night with a lot of trees losing branches. Does it remind anyone else of Jurassic Park? You invite a load of famous pros over to inspect the facilities on your island, a storm hits and before ya know it you’ve got velociraptors on the 18th green. Let’s see Tiger Woods handle that. I know Padraig Harrington wouldn’t be fazed, “ah sure he’s only here to watch the golf like everyone else”. Yes, I have a warped mind.

Richard HammondIn sadder news, Wednesday evening saw Richard Hammond crash a jet powered car at 300mph. He had been filming a segment for Top Gear when the car veered off the runway and rolled over. Doctors say he suffered a “significant brain injury” but are hopeful that he’ll make a “good recovery”. Jeremy Clarkson has said that Hammond smiled when he insulted his driving skills so that’s hopefully indicative that the damage is not too bad. Hope he gets well soon. There’s a certain every-man way to him that really endears him to audiences. He’s up for anything and unfortunately that’s done him a disservice on this occasion but that’s his nature. 🙂

It’s live

DSC01742
Well so ends a very busy week. The new version of dublin.ie was put live on Wednesday afternoon (one day later than we expected) and things have gone relatively smoothly since. There have been issues with some people not being able to login but we’re handling the queries as they come in with the helpdesk. I’m really pleased with the new design although there is so much still to sort out. I’ve printed out all 12 content zones (ie. Accommodation, Transport etc) and stuck them on the wall in work just so I can get a view on what’s fully finished and what’s not. It can be quite hard to do without the visual aid as we’re aiming for consistency across all pages. I’ve been modifying the source code of the site and although I don’t really know .net I haven’t broken anything…..yet.

On the socialising front I’ve been to three comedy gigs in the space of two weeks. Considering I haven’t been much over the past six months, that’s quite an achievement. Particularly memorably was Damien Clark‘s Comedy Cellar performance. Some guy who was sitting by the door decided to get up and go out before Damien’s set ended so Damo asked where he was going. “Out for a smoke, I’ll be back in 2 minutes” came the reply. “Alright everybody get your coats, we’ll finish the gig outside!” he said and we all trundled down to the front of the International Bar where Damo duely finished his set. I took a couple of pics. 🙂 I’ve actually stuck up a few photos from different things like trips to the pub and the Liffey Swim.
